Comparing Grizzly Bears and Black Bears

Human-Bear Coexistence

Bears are frequently valued for their keystone impact on ecosystems and various species. They are commonly recognized as an umbrella species, with their presence and well-being ensuring the welfare of many other species. Acquiring knowledge about bears and adopting practices that allow for human-bear coexistence in bear-habitat is a critical component of maintaining bears in BC.

Bear attacks are infrequent. According to an article in Nature, brown bears killed 24 people in North America from 2000 to 2015, a rate of 1.5 per year.  Encountering bears in the wild is more likely to enhance, rather than disrupt your wilderness experience.

Nonetheless, it is important to be prepared for, and prevent bear encounters when living, working, and recreating in bear country. Understanding bear behavior and body language, and responding appropriately contributes to this preparation. It is prudent to be prepared for potential encounters. When in bear country, always carry bear spray.

It’s important to note that there is no foolproof method for handling bear encounters, as each bear and situation is unique.
